To frequent patrons of New York City cabaret-style lounges and US based Caribbean events across the Tri-state, the name Levantay may ring a bell. Upcoming Jamaican born-New York based singer/songwriter and former Miss Jamaica USA runner-up Levantay is making strides and proving she will very soon be a force to reckon with on the local and International Music scene.
The soft-spoken singer can be easily considered a breath of fresh air, very attractive and possessing lots of natural charm and innocence. At first impression Levantay is very unassuming, however, the minute she starts singing she demands attention with her rich, engaging tone exuding passion from each note.
Levantay has written numerous songs and considers herself a writer above everything else. Her talent and networking has now finally been getting some recognition, allowing her the opportunity to work with top musicians such as Grammy nominated Pianist of Israel Vibrations band and many others. Levantay has been making numerous appearances in the United States and made stops in London during the heat of the 2012 Olympics, which she was excited about especially while celebrating Jamaica’s 50 years of Independence.
The articulate and eclectic Miss Levantay is definitely an artiste to look out for on both the local and International scene. She is currently working with a number of Jamaican producers and looking to do great collabs with local artistes she says. Fans can look out for her debut Music Video to be released in the fall, which she is very excited about and also working on her EP and website to be launched very soon.
The charismatic, talented Jamaican singer Diana King, is most popular for her hit single, ‘Shy Guy’ which sold over 5 million copies worlwide and making it to No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. She also made an appearance on Notorious B.I.G’s song ‘Respect’ from his album, ‘Ready To die’ to name a few of her achievements. Diana has appeared on some the worlds largest shows, such as Essence Awards, Soul train and VIBE.
The bald-headed beauty has also shared the stage with top celebrities such as Brian McKnight and Celine Dion, representing her island Jamaica and Reggae music for almost 2 decades.
Recently posted on King’s Facebook page was a very lengthy note to her fans (I have only posted a few excerpts from the note):
“My name is DIANA EUGENA KING, known to most as DIANA KING my fans call me KingSinga. I AM … WOMAN … MOTHER … AUNT … JAMAICAN … AMERICAN … INTERNATIONAL ARTIST … SINGER … SONGWRITER … BAND LEADER … FRIEND … LOVER … ENTREPRENEUR … GODDESS! among other things AND YES!!…..I AM A LESBIAN … the answer to my most asked INDIRECT question. I welcome the “WHO CARES” right now LOL.”
Immediately following was an explanation as to why she has decided to ‘come out’: “Honestly speaking, I have always been afraid to admit it openly, because of the unknown, of what it may cause negatively, to me, my career, my family and loved ones. But I realized that it is not my job to make others comfortable, I am only responsible for my life, the stuff U think about on your deathbed and at this point in my life I do not care about the things that frighten me anymore…My biggest regret is that I didn’t COME OUT earlier because being silent has held me back from being ALL that I was born to be. The DEEP FEAR that I’ve had, especially that my own JAMAICAN PEOPLE will judge me and not accept me because of their homophobia has been a heavy burden. I fly my country’s flag HIGH…..I could have STAYED SAFE AND HIDDEN but for me, IT WOULD MEAN THAT ALL THOSE WHO HAVE DIED for BEING LIKE ME … ALL DIED IN VAIN. As usual, MUCH LUV AND GOOD VIBES TO U ALL. AND IF U DECIDE NOW THAT U DO NOT “LOVE” ME ANYMORE … KNOW THIS!!! NOTHING WILL EVER MAKE ME STOP LOVING U.”
For many years, fans and followers of the multi-talented singer have expressed assumptions, in regards to King’s sexuality, however this is the first time that she has outrightly admitted her sexual preference. She has gained overwhelming support from her fans based on the numberous comments which followed.
Another Kid-Celebrity on the rise to stardom….12 year old Selah, is the daughter of Lauryn Hill and Rohan Marley, son of the legendary Bob Marley.
Selah was photographed by Victor Demarcheller for Teen Vogue magazine, and she sure looked amazing and definitely a ‘mini-me’ of her mother, Hill. In the interview, she spoke how she randomly introduced her interest in modelling to her father, ‘I was in a hotel with my dad, and I was just joking around and said, ‘Oh yeah, Daddy, I want to model…..I don’t know—the camera is just fun.”
She spoke of her many extra-curricular activities outside of school, which involve ‘piano, violin, guitar, basketball, gymnastics and ballet.. and the fact that she still manages to maintain an ‘A’ average, which was highlighted by her Mom. Of her notable musical talent in her family, she said she ‘likes her Mothers music..it is truthful..’ and of her Grandfather, Bob Marley of course, she find shis music soothing.
Selah made sure to express her ‘public love’ for Justin Beiber, (see video below) mentioning she admired his rise to fame, and his cute looks (lol). The bubbly, little diva said the pressure to be ‘another successful Marley’ was very much in existence, she said, “People tell me I have to follow in the footsteps of my mom and grandfather, but it’s a lot of pressure—I can’t really slip up and mess up the name.” From the looks of things, it seems Lauryn is not taking anything for granted, haha Selah told sources, “One day I was like, ‘Mom, you wanna sign me at Sony?'” Selah recalls. Her mother’s response? “Let me hear your stuff and I’ll think about it.”
We have our eyes on this little Island princess on the rise…it really is scary how much she resembles her mother:) Taking the Caribbean to the worlddd!!
